Boarded an Alaska Airlines flight early this morning at Seattle Sea-Tac airport for our trip to Petersburg.  There was a line of thunderstorms that ran through Seattle early this morning, a relatively unusual circumstance for that part of the US.  We were late leaving because of the storms as well as fog in Ketchikan.

Flying to the panhandle of Alaska is very interesting.  We had a half-hour layover in Ketchikan and were allowed to deplane if we wished.  When ready to depart again, a Customer Service Agent just walks down the aisle of the plane and checks you name off the list.  Not quite the crackerjack homeland security most of us envision!

Toni Rogers greeted us at the airport terminal (one room affair) and gave us a quick rundown on the best of Petersburg.  After checking into our spacious room at the Scandia House we set out to explore.  Picked up Halibut Beer Bits from Coastal Cold Storage (makes fabulous seafood dishes, soups, and chowders to carry out and ships fresh-caught seafood all over the world) and ate them next door at the Harbor Bar (featured prominently in the mystery book "Murder at Five Finger Light" by Sue Henry) accompanied by some good Alaskan Amber beer.   We decided to walk off lunch but it started to rain so came back to our room to relax and read the local paper, hot off the presses. It's published every Thursday and this edition covered all of the upcoming events for the holiday.

Later in the afternoon the rain stopped so we walked down to Eagle's Roost Park where the bald eagles sit in the trees to better spot fish in the waters off Petersburg.  Not much action this afternoon - one flew off as we walked up and that was about it.  But the walk was lovely and the clouds against the green mountains are beautiful.

Had dinner at a wonderful restaurant - the Beachcomber Restaurant, a restored cannery that was originally owned by the grandmother of Toni Rogers of Alaska Sea Adventures.  The food was outstanding and Kevin took great care of us.  The restaurant has spectacular views and a covered porch for outdoor eating.  The dessert from Emily's, a local bakery, was absolutely amazing.
